Inge Lagae’s design urge originated during her travels and the people she met along the way. kana objects is her label that concretises her endless stream of inspiration and hunches, and, in doing so, sends out rock-solid furniture and objects into the world. Every creation has a soul and a lasting appeal. The production takes place in Belgium, and is a seamless combination of craft and precise, innovative machinery. Inge is always happy to receive professionals in her showroom in Mechelen by appointment. A long life cycle, an imperfect appearance, and a rawness factor typify the look of her designs. The margin for small deviations that is inherent to the artisanal process creates an interesting contrast with the flawlessness of the designs themselves. For example, different sorts of oak are alternated with steal or a brass effect, after they have been sandblasted or brushed and were given a finishing in a matt, water-based varnish. One time, Lagae chooses hand brushed thick veneer, while the other she opts for solid swamp oak and smoked oak. With time, the beauty of the collections only increases, considering that they are born out of the conviction that design can be both sustainable and high-end in quality. From side tables and benches to sideboards and bookshelfs: each form shows the cultural weight that refers to Japanese minimalism.
